Remedy Entertainment takes a bold step forward with Alan Wake 2, a decade-late sequel to the game that defined the studio. Animal Well

The Enigmatic Puzzle Game Drawing Fez Comparisons

Pic Courtesy : Playstation

This strange, spooky puzzle adventure is being hailed as the spiritual successor to the 2012 indie classic Fez—and honestly, there can be no higher praise. Describing it without spoilers is challenging, as the mystery of discovery is paramount. The game cleverly conceals its true nature until you are deeply immersed. It’s one of those rare titles best enjoyed with a notebook at hand, capable of transforming players into obsessive conspiracy theorists.

At its core, you play as an egg-blob-thing navigating a spectral forest inhabited by exquisitely animated, ghostly animals. The gameplay unfolds like a Metroidvania, with a 2D platforming map that expands in a non-linear fashion as you collect gear. However, it’s even more inscrutable and mysterious than this might suggest, operating like a giant puzzle written in a language you decipher as you progress.

Visually, the game is stunning, featuring translucent, glowing pixel art that is both ephemeral and tactile. A seven-year labor of love by developer Billy Basso, this masterpiece was well worth the wait. Get ready to be enchanted and challenged in ways that only the most innovative indie games can offer.

Armored Core 6 : Fires of Rubicon

A Spectacular Return to PlayStation

Ten years ago, the thought of a new Armored Core game making our list of the best PlayStation 5 games seemed far-fetched. Yet here we are, celebrating the triumphant return of FromSoftware’s old-school mech combat franchise. Riding high on the cultural and financial success of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, FromSoftware has revitalized Armored Core, a series that originally found its home on PlayStation.

Armored Core: Fires of Rubicon delivers a ferociously enjoyable, highly customizable, mission-based vehicular combat experience with a surprisingly engaging storyline that sneaks up on you. While it diverges from the Soulslike formula that catapulted FromSoftware to fame, it retains the detailed art, meticulously crafted combat mechanics, and epic boss encounters that test your limits.

This latest installment blends nostalgia with modern gameplay, reaffirming Armored Core’s legacy and earning its place among the PlayStation 5’s finest. If you’re a fan of FromSoftware’s meticulous design and challenging gameplay, Fires of Rubicon is a must-play title that proves the enduring appeal of mech warfare.

Astro’s Playroom invites you to explore the inner workings of your PlayStation 5 in a delightful, imaginative platformer. The first area, Cooling Springs, features waterslides and glaciers, cleverly symbolizing the console’s cooling mechanisms. This charming theme extends throughout the game, highlighting various aspects of the PS5 hardware.

As with any great platformer, Astro’s Playroom offers pure joy in its environments. While Astro might not boast the vast array of abilities seen in Super Mario Odyssey, he’s equipped with a handy jetpack, a fierce spin attack, and a powerful rope-tugging skill. These actions beautifully demonstrate the DualSense controller’s advanced haptics, enhancing the gameplay experience. For instance, walking across a glass surface produces subtle tippy-tap sensations, while pulling on a rope to catapult an underground enemy delivers a strong, immersive vibration followed by the satisfying ka-thunk of Astro landing on his robutt.

Initially, Astro’s Playroom might seem like a simple pack-in game, something to occupy your system storage while waiting for larger titles to download. However, it quickly reveals itself as one of the finest platformers Sony has ever produced. Combining the charm and fluidity of a Nintendo platformer with a showcase of the PS5’s innovative features, Astro’s Playroom proves to be an essential and delightful experience for any PS5 owner.

After an impressive three-year early-access period on PC, Larian Studios’ hardcore Dungeons & Dragons-based role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate 3, has emerged as a critical and commercial phenomenon. The Belgian studio has adeptly transitioned this traditionally computer-centric genre to consoles, making Baldur’s Gate 3 feel perfectly at home on the PS5.

The popularization of D&D through actual-play series has created a receptive audience for a game of this caliber, and Larian delivers spectacularly. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers an experience that closely mirrors tabletop role-playing, featuring strong storytelling, unforgettable characters, incredible flexibility, and extensive player agency. The game embraces the delightful chaos and inherent messiness of D&D, complete with a healthy dose of humor and barely disguised horniness.

Moreover, the PS5 version includes split-screen co-op, enhancing the communal aspect of the game. Baldur’s Gate 3 stands as one of the best role-playing games of all time, showcasing Larian Studios’ ability to overdeliver in every aspect. If you’re a fan of D&D or RPGs, this game is an unmissable experience on the PlayStation 5.

Cyberpunk 2077 has made an astonishing turnaround, earning its place among the top PlayStation 5 games despite its rocky start. Initially delisted from the PlayStation Store due to the poor performance of its PS4 version, the game has undergone a Herculean transformation thanks to developer CD Projekt Red. The native PS5 version boasts significant tech and visual upgrades, and the 2023 Phantom Liberty expansion introduced sweeping gameplay updates and a captivating new storyline.

The revamped Cyberpunk 2077 finally delivers on the promise of its original concept: a 1980s-inflected cyberpunk fantasia blending the best elements of Deus Ex and Grand Theft Auto, Blade Runner and The Matrix. While the game might not be as effortlessly cool as it aspires to be, this only adds to its charm. CD Projekt Red, known for the Witcher series, continues to excel in crafting intricate characterizations, engrossing side stories, and a unique brand of cynical romanticism.

Deathloop

Mastering the Art of Speedrunning in a Time-Bending Assassin’s Paradise

Image showing deathloop
Pic Courtesy : Playstation

By the time I completed my final run of Deathloop, I expected to feel like a superpowered, time-bending assassin. Instead, the game transformed me into a masterful speedrunner. Success in this time-looping adventure hinges on memorizing the routines of assassination targets across four distinct times of the day. The challenge lies in orchestrating specific scenarios to ensure all targets are in the right place at the right time for elimination. After approximately 20 hours of reliving the same day, the culmination of my efforts kept me on the edge of my seat.

The climax of Deathloop demands the precise execution of taking out all targets in a single run. It felt like setting up dominos, only to watch them fall with unparalleled style and precision. The thrill of executing a meticulously crafted plan, armed with knowledge, a powerful arsenal, and superpowers, made every moment of investigation and preparation worthwhile.

Deathloop still holds many mysteries for me to uncover, and I eagerly anticipate revealing all of Blackreef’s secrets. This game perfectly blends strategy, action, and a compelling narrative, making it an unforgettable experience for any gamer.

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut

The Ultimate Way to Experience Hideo Kojima’s Unique Vision

Pic Courtesy : Playstation

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut is the definitive version of one of the most unusual games in recent years. While 2019’s Death Stranding attracted a dedicated audience, it also saw many players quickly bounce off. The Director’s Cut makes Hideo Kojima’s independent debut more accessible without sacrificing its unique identity.

In Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, you still guide Sam Porter Bridges across a condensed version of the United States, precariously stacking packages on his back. However, this time, Sam has more tools available early in his journey. Instead of spending the first 15 hours with only a rope as a weapon, you can now quickly acquire a gun that stuns enemies with lightning. Additionally, the re-release offers a substantial firing range to test your loadout before diving into combat scenarios.

Despite the new gadgets, Death Stranding remains a game about the grunt work necessary to connect with others. Its script may be metaphorically clumsy, but it never stumbles in expressing those metaphors through gameplay.

Hideo Kojima has never been known for subtlety, but the smallest changes in Death Stranding: Director’s Cut make it much easier to recommend. These enhancements create a more approachable yet still deeply engaging experience, cementing it as the ultimate way to play this unique game.

Demon’s Souls

A Stunning Remake of a Groundbreaking Classic

Image showing demons souls

Demon’s Souls has always had solid foundations. This was true in 2009 when FromSoftware introduced the mechanically groundbreaking role-playing game on PlayStation 3, and it remains true with Bluepoint Games’ remake, released alongside the PlayStation 5.

The remake offers a gorgeous remodeling over those solid bones. Every texture in Demon’s Souls has been meticulously repainted, sometimes to the point of bold reinterpretation. Stilted animations from the original have been replaced by more lifelike and fluid ones, adding layers of realism to the experience. Many of the original game’s points of frustration, such as long load times and frequent backtracking, have been softened or nearly eliminated.

However, Bluepoint wisely refrains from altering the core of Demon’s Souls. The essence of what made the original game a classic remains intact, honoring its legacy. This stunning remake not only brings the visual and technical aspects to modern standards but also preserves the challenging and rewarding gameplay that fans cherished.

Demon’s Souls on PS5 is a masterclass in how to respectfully update a beloved game, making it accessible to a new generation while satisfying long-time fans.

Disco Elysium

A Unique Blend of Detective Noir and RPG Excellence

Image showing disco elysium
Pic Courtesy : Playstation

A grungy detective story involving politics, alcoholism, and failure might seem suited for a visual novel, walking simulator, or perhaps a horror game. Yet, Disco Elysium by the Estonian art collective ZA/UM is an exceptional role-playing game that defies conventions. On this list, only Baldur’s Gate 3 rivals it in offering players unparalleled freedom in making choices, defining their characters, and responding to various situations.

While deeply influenced by tabletop RPGs, Disco Elysium eschews traditional turn-based combat. Instead, it presents a deep and fascinating skill and leveling system where even abstract concepts like feminism act as stat buffs. Players build and explore their detective character’s psychology and worldview through complex, sometimes darkly humorous internal dialogues with different facets of his own psyche.

Set against a noir-ish murder mystery backdrop in a dilapidated town that blends 1970s vibes with steampunk aesthetics, Disco Elysium is utterly idiosyncratic. Its richly detailed world and narrative complexity make it a one-of-a-kind experience that is unlikely to be replicated. Disco Elysium is not just a game; it’s a masterful exploration of the human condition wrapped in an engaging RPG format.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

A Must-Play Fantasy RPG

Epic fantasy RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring have set the bar high, but Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 brings a fresh, unique twist to the genre. This game isn’t just another technical masterpiece; it’s a real-time fantasy adventure simulator that slowly reveals its depth and charm.

At first glance, Dragon’s Dogma 2 might seem confusing and even a bit janky. However, as you immerse yourself, you’ll discover a dynamic world filled with unpredictable monsters and equally unpredictable Pawn NPCs that fight alongside you. The game’s constantly surprising nature creates unforgettable gaming stories, setting it apart from its contemporaries.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 offers a genuinely wild world that unfolds in real-time, providing a unique experience every time you play. With its blend of fantasy elements and unexpected twists, this game is a standout in the RPG genre and a must-play for any fantasy adventure enthusiast.

Elden Ring

FromSoftware’s Masterpiece Expands the Dark Fantasy Universe

The intricate and demanding action-RPG format that FromSoftware pioneered with Demon’s Souls reaches new heights in Elden Ring. This epic open-world adventure retains the core elements that fans love while introducing an expansive scale and unparalleled freedom of exploration. The game’s vast world provides a breadth of discovery and adventure that surpasses the confined warrens of the Dark Souls series, all while maintaining the mysterious and sorrowful atmosphere characteristic of FromSoftware’s dark fantasy masterpieces.

Be prepared for a challenge: Elden Ring is not an easy game, though its difficulty is often exaggerated. As always, success in this game relies on patience, strategic planning, and careful restraint rather than just quick reflexes. This is particularly true in the game’s legendary boss encounters, which are some of the most testing in gaming history. However, the open-world design and flexible class systems make Elden Ring the most inviting and accessible FromSoftware game to date, without diminishing its imposing and majestic presence.

Elden Ring is a modern classic that seamlessly blends the depth of traditional Soulslike games with the vastness of an open world, offering an unforgettable journey for both new players and veteran fans.

Final Fantasy 14

A Titan in the MMORPG Genre

Image showing playstation 5 games final fantasy 14
Pic Courtesy : Playstation

Final Fantasy 14 stands as the only MMORPG to truly step out from World of Warcraft’s shadow and rival Blizzard’s game in popularity over the past two decades. This achievement almost never came to be. Originally launched in 2010 to disastrous reception, Square Enix made a bold decision to revamp the game entirely. Under the guidance of producer Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy 14 relaunched in 2013 as A Realm Reborn, transitioning from PlayStation 3 to PS4, and now to PS5. It has steadily gained a stellar reputation, earning its place as one of the all-time greats in the genre. Gaming has rarely witnessed such a remarkable comeback story.

The reasons for its success are straightforward yet exceptionally executed. The game features a stunning world with compelling storylines and characters deeply rooted in Final Fantasy lore, appealing to both new players and long-time fans. As an MMORPG, it offers great flexibility and individuality in character classes, alongside engaging PvE dungeons and raids. What truly sets it apart is its player-centric approach, including a “story mode” that allows solo players to experience climactic multiplayer content.

Moreover, Final Fantasy 14 excels in a domain where many others falter: console gameplay. It runs beautifully on consoles, a feat rarely achieved by other MMORPGs, with the possible exception of its predecessor, Final Fantasy 11. This seamless console experience, combined with its rich content and player-friendly features, cements Final Fantasy 14 as a modern classic and a titan in the MMORPG world.

God of War: Ragnarok

Santa Monica Studio’s Masterpiece

Santa Monica Studio’s God of War: Ragnarok is the latest iteration of Sony’s signature high-gloss, cinematic beat-’em-up, delivering an exceptional blend of action and storytelling. While the game offers the polished, engaging entertainment that Sony excels at, it also boasts a clever design, intertwining a robust action game with understated yet satisfying RPG-lite character progression. The smart script brings together a lovable ensemble of eccentric characters around our gruff, god-killing hero, Kratos, delving into the intricate and dramatic realms of Norse mythology. The inspired casting of Richard Schiff, best known as Toby from The West Wing, as the irritable and grousing Odin, adds an extra layer of brilliance.

However, the game’s true genius lies in its accessibility. God of War: Ragnarok isn’t aiming to be the next Baldur’s Gate 3 or Elden Ring; instead, it offers a largely on-rails spectacle full of thrilling button-mashing, surprisingly touching performances, and a steady rhythm of Big Moments designed to keep players engaged. Its visual presentation is stunning, especially considering it’s a cross-generational release with the PlayStation 4. This game is a solid blockbuster, providing an unforgettable experience through its blend of action, story, and sheer spectacle.

Gran Turismo 7

A Love Letter to Car Enthusiasts on PS5

Over 25 years in, a PlayStation console just doesn’t feel complete until it has its Gran Turismo game. This milestone was achieved for the PS5 in 2022 with the release of Gran Turismo 7 (GT7). Despite initial criticisms regarding the game’s grindy economy and overpriced microtransactions, GT7 has emerged as one of the most satisfying, accessible, and enjoyable entries in the series’ history.

Rather than chasing modern gaming trends, Polyphony Digital has leaned into Gran Turismo’s unique, slightly stuffy charm, creating a game that overflows with a nerdy love for cars and racing. The driving simulation is superb, and the photorealistic visuals are peerless. But what truly captivates players is the delightful single-player Café mode. This mode offers a guided tour of the game’s meticulously curated garage, complete with sweetly enthusiastic commentary from in-game characters.

In a genre often dominated by customization and feature checklists, Gran Turismo 7 stands out for its wonderfully personal touch. The game’s myriad activities, from license tests to mission challenges and the Scapes photo mode, all feel thoughtfully designed. Additionally, GT Sport offers a top-notch online racing experience that is both accessible and fair, making it a superb choice for competitive players.

Ultimately, Gran Turismo 7 reinforces the series’ reputation as the thinking person’s racing game, blending meticulous detail with a heartfelt passion for the world of cars and motorsport.

It’s not hard to see why. Hades offers immense depth and charm, combining sophisticated, witty storytelling with razor-sharp combat and a roguelike-inspired structure.

In Hades, you play as Zagreus, the rebellious son of Hades, lord of the Underworld, who is determined to escape his father’s realm. Each run takes you further through a randomized labyrinth of deadly rooms, utilizing boons and weapons bestowed upon Zagreus by the indulgent gods of Olympus. Imagine if Starship Troopers was transformed into a cooperative, third-person shooter instead of a satirical sci-fi movie. It would be nothing short of amazing. Arrowhead Game Studios’ sleeper hit captures this thrilling concept with stunning success. The game’s simple yet effective formula, rooted in its 2015 predecessor, evolves into a fully-fledged, 3D bug-battling warzone.

Once the initial chaos subsided, what emerged was an ideal, no-frills online game perfect for teaming up with friends.
