Millie Bobby Brown to Adapt Her Debut Novel Nineteen Steps into a Feature Film for Netflix

Millie Bobby Brown, the breakout star of Stranger Things, is set to bring her literary debut to life on the big screen. The young actress and producer will adapt her bestselling novel, Nineteen Steps, into a feature film for Netflix, with plans to produce under her PCMA banner and potentially star in the project.

The screenplay for Nineteen Steps will be adapted by the renowned screenwriter Anthony McCarten, a four-time Oscar nominee best known for his work on The Theory of Everything, Darkest Hour, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Jonathan Eirich will produce the film for Rideback, with Nick Reynolds serving as executive producer.

Published in September 2023 by William Morrow, Nineteen Steps quickly became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller. The novel, co-written by Brown and Kathleen McGurl, is a poignant World War II drama inspired by the real-life experiences of Brown’s grandmother. Set in the East London neighborhood of Bethnal Green, the story follows 18-year-old Nellie Morris as she navigates the hardships of wartime life. Amid the constant threat of bombings, rationing, and the emotional strain of separation from loved ones, Nellie finds herself in a blossoming romance with American airman Ray. At the heart of the novel lies the tragic Bethnal Green Tube disaster, one of the UK’s deadliest civilian incidents during the war, where 173 people lost their lives in a desperate attempt to seek shelter during an air raid.

As Stranger Things gears up for its fifth and final season, Brown’s star continues to rise.

In addition to her work on Stranger Things, Brown recently headlined Netflix’s fantasy film Damsel, which has amassed 138 million views, placing it at No. 7 on the platform’s Most Popular Movies list. She also starred in the widely popular Enola Holmes films, as well as the blockbusters Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. The film is slated for a March 2025 release.

Anthony McCarten’s involvement in the adaptation of Nineteen Steps adds further prestige to the project. The Oscar-nominated writer-producer is known for his compelling biopics, including I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Bohemian Rhapsody, which brought the lives of music legends Whitney Houston and Freddie Mercury to the big screen. McCarten’s other upcoming projects include The Collaboration, a film based on his own play that explores the friendship between iconic artists Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

With Brown’s strong personal connection to the story and her growing influence in Hollywood, Nineteen Steps is poised to be a moving and visually captivating film that will resonate with audiences around the world. ‘Crossed’ Movie in Works From ‘The Boys’ Creator

Garth Ennis, the acclaimed creator behind hit adaptations Preacher and The Boys, is about to see another one of his iconic works hit the screen. His gritty comic series Crossed is being adapted into a feature film, with Ennis himself penning the screenplay.

Indie outfit Six Studios has acquired the rights to the script and is preparing to back the movie, aiming for a production budget between $2 million and $3 million, though that figure may rise if top-tier talent comes aboard.

Crossed is set in a world ravaged by a deadly pandemic that transforms the infected into dangerous, homicidal maniacs. Marked by a grotesque, cross-shaped rash on their faces, these afflicted individuals retain their intelligence but succumb to their darkest impulses, creating a nightmarish landscape that evokes the chaos of a zombie apocalypse—but with a disturbingly human twist.

The original 10-issue comic series, which ran from 2008 to 2010, was a brutal, dark exploration of survival in a world gone mad. Its success spurred the creation of over 200 additional issues written by various authors, including legendary Watchmen scribe Alan Moore.

Now, after years of anticipation, Crossed is set to take the leap to the big screen, bringing Ennis’ terrifying vision to life.

Garth Ennis (Creator of The Boys comics)

Currently, Six Studios is actively searching for the right director to helm the project, with production slated to begin this fall. Producers Carl Choi of Six Studios, Ben Hung of Retro Entertainment, and Ken Levin of Nightsky Productions are leading the charge, having worked closely with Ennis to develop the adaptation. Ennis will serve as an executive producer alongside Six Studios’ Jeff Huang, Carl Amari, and Bill Patterson.

With The Boys becoming one of Amazon’s most successful series and a cultural phenomenon, Ennis has solidified his place as one of the foremost creators of dark, subversive comic book adaptations. The Boys has been praised for its fearless storytelling, spawning multiple spinoffs and drawing in massive viewership, and it is set to conclude with its upcoming fifth season. Likewise, Preacher ran for four acclaimed seasons from 2016 to 2019.

Beyond Crossed, Six Studios is also expanding its portfolio with other high-profile projects, including a TV adaptation of Raymond E. Feist’s The Riftwar Saga and Curse of the Sin Eater, which was recently picked up by Samuel Goldwyn.

As Crossed gears up for production, fans of Ennis’ work are eager to see how this savage and gripping story will translate to film, promising another unforgettable entry in the legacy of Ennis’ groundbreaking comic book adaptations.

While details surrounding Smith and Schreiber’s characters remain under wraps, their involvement heightens anticipation for this high-stakes thriller.

Caught Stealing is adapted from Charlie Huston’s novel of the same name, with Huston himself penning the screenplay. The film centers on Hank Thompson (played by Butler), a washed-up former baseball player whose life takes a perilous turn when he is inadvertently dragged into the gritty underworld of 1990s New York City. As Hank becomes embroiled in a brutal fight for survival, the movie promises to be a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat ride. Smith, currently captivating audiences as the enigmatic Prince Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, is no stranger to high-profile roles. Nicolas Cage to Play John Madden in David O. Russell-Directed Biopic

Writer-director David O. Russell has tapped Nicolas Cage to lead Madden, an Amazon MGM Studios drama that chronicles John Madden’s unexpected journey from Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Oakland Raiders to an iconic sports broadcaster and, ultimately, the force behind the world-renowned Madden NFL video game franchise.

Madden won’t follow the traditional sports biopic format nor confine itself to the sports drama genre, which Russell previously explored with The Fighter. Instead, the film will offer a unique blend of storytelling, partly delving into the origins of one of the most successful video game franchises ever—Madden NFL.

Madden first rose to fame in the 1970s, leading the Oakland Raiders to a series of victories that solidified his reputation as one of football’s greats. After retiring from coaching, he transitioned to broadcasting, captivating audiences with his larger-than-life personality and insightful commentary. His dynamic style earned him 16 Sports Emmy Awards and made him a household name.

But Madden’s cultural legacy extended beyond the football field and television booth. In the 1980s, he began collaborating with Electronic Arts to develop what would become Madden NFL, a game that revolutionized the sports gaming industry and continues to be a global phenomenon to this day. In fact, for many, Madden’s name is more closely tied to the gaming series than to his accomplishments in broadcasting or coaching.

Cage’s involvement follows months of strategic maneuvering by Russell to secure the right talent for the project. Previously, Hugh Jackman had been in discussions to star. Cage, known for his chameleon-like ability to tackle a wide range of roles, is fresh off a string of critically acclaimed performances in films like Longlegs, Renfield, Pig, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. His portrayal of Madden will be yet another chance for him to showcase his immense versatility and dedication.

Russell penned the script, which builds on an earlier draft by Cambron Clark. The project is being produced by Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists, alongside Jonathan Shukat, Russell, and Matthew Budman. David Bloomfield will executive produce for Escape Artists.

As a hybrid video game film and character study, Madden promises to offer a fresh take on the man who left an indelible mark on both the sports and entertainment industries, through coaching, broadcasting, and gaming alike.

Camila Mendes to Star as Teela in ‘Masters of the Universe’ With Nicholas Galitzine

Camila Mendes, widely known for her role as Veronica Lodge on the CW’s Riverdale, has officially landed the coveted part of Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie. This highly anticipated adaptation of the classic 1980s toy line will also star Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) as He-Man.

Helmed by visionary director Travis Knight—founder of Laika Studios and the creative force behind Kubo and the Two Strings—the film is set to bring the iconic world of Eternia to life on the big screen. The plot, while largely under wraps, revolves around Prince Adam, the heir to the throne of Eternia, who wields the Power Sword to transform into the mighty He-Man. Together with his band of loyal allies, He-Man defends the planet from the dark forces of Skeletor.

Mendes takes on the role of Teela, the fiercely skilled captain of the royal guard and the adopted daughter of Man-at-Arms, the royal weapons expert. Teela’s character has been depicted as a complex figure in the various animated adaptations, often serving as both a loyal protector of Eternia and a romantic interest for Prince Adam, with hints that she may suspect his dual identity as He-Man.

The film’s script was written by Chris Butler, based on earlier drafts by David Callaham and the Nee brothers (Aaron and Adam), who had previously developed the project under Sony and Netflix. Now fully revived under Amazon MGM Studios, Masters of the Universe is slated for an exclusive worldwide theatrical release on June 5, 2026.

First debuting in 1983 with the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the franchise quickly became a cultural phenomenon, one of the first children’s shows to be widely syndicated. Over the decades, it has evolved into a multimedia juggernaut encompassing toys, comics, films, and video games, cementing its legacy in pop culture.

Mendes, who recently wrapped up her run on Riverdale, continues to take Hollywood by storm. In 2024, she appeared in Upgraded and Música, while her earlier work includes the hit teen black comedy Do Revenge. This fall, she will take on a starring role in Sony’s reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, adding yet another feather to her impressive cap.
