Wes Ball, the visionary director known for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the Maze Runner trilogy, is set to bring the acclaimed video game Ruiner to life on the big screen. Universal Pictures has secured the rights to adapt the action-packed cyberpunk shooter, with Michael Arlen Ross on board to craft the screenplay.
Set in the dystopian year 2091, Ruiner transports players to the dark and neon-soaked cyber metropolis of Rengkok. The story centers on a wired anti-hero who embarks on a relentless quest to dismantle a corrupt system, uncover the truth, and rescue his kidnapped brother. Aided by a mysterious hacker, the protagonist battles through a world teeming with brutal violence and cutting-edge technology, all while inching closer to the city’s deepest and darkest secrets.
Since its release, Ruiner has garnered a dedicated fanbase, boasting over 4 million players and maintaining a stellar 90% positive rating on Steam. The game’s gritty atmosphere, intense action, and compelling narrative make it a prime candidate for a cinematic adaptation.
Wes Ball’s involvement adds significant weight to the project. Known for his ability to blend high-octane action with compelling storytelling, Ball is a perfect fit for bringing the cyberpunk world of Ruiner to the silver screen. In addition to Ruiner, Ball’s packed schedule includes the highly anticipated adaptation of The Legend of Zelda for Nintendo and Sony, as well as the potential for another installment in the Apes franchise.
Universal Pictures has a proven track record of successful video game adaptations, with box office hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s. The studio is banking on Ruiner to continue this streak, leveraging its immersive world and action-packed gameplay to attract both gamers and moviegoers alike.
Producing the film are Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Wes Ball, and Joe Hartwick Jr., while Timothy I. Stevenson, Dan Jevons, Marek Roefler, Magdalena Tomkowicz, and Jakub Stylinski will serve as executive producers. Universal’s senior vice president of production development, Ryan Jones, along with creative executive Jacqueline Garell, will oversee the project for the studio. Additionally, Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, the producing duo behind hits like The Fall Guy, Bullet Train, and Nobody, will produce through their 87North first-look deal with Universal Pictures.
With Wes Ball at the helm and a powerhouse production team backing it, Ruiner is poised to be a standout entry in the growing genre of video game adaptations. Fans of the game and newcomers alike can look forward to a visually stunning and action-packed journey through the dystopian streets of Rengkok.
